Springtime is transitioning into summer, and more people are stepping outside to enjoy the sunshine. Healthy lungs can keep you going throughout the day.
Here are five tips for happy lungs.
Have a good laugh with your friends! Laughing works your abdominal muscles, increases lung capacity, and forces out stale air, allowing more room for fresh air. Many of our Avamere residents enjoy Laughter Yoga, an activity where residents act out fun stories. This promotes fun and laughter all while promoting pulmonary health.
Our residents also enjoy a good laugh during social hour. Whether you’re an Avamere resident or not, a good laugh with friends is a great way to keep your lungs happy and healthy.
2. Take a deep breath
Deep breathing not only helps lower your stress level, but it also helps your lungs! Deep breathing helps you get closer to reaching your lungs’ full capacity.
Inhale slowly, letting your lungs and belly expand. Then exhale, letting out as much air as possible.
3. Drink a glass of water
Water is just as important for your lungs as it is for the rest of your body! Jennifer Ryan, a certified specialist in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, says staying hydrated keeps mucosal linings in the lungs thin, helping the lungs function better.
4. Sit up
Give our lungs a little extra room by sitting up straight.
5. See your doctor
Your doctor can give you the advice and tips you need to keep your lungs healthy. Talk to your doctor for a health plan tailored just for you.
