Down south in the warm city of Phoenix, Arizona is home to seniors enjoying their sunny retirement at Avamere at The Stratford.
Avamere at The Stratford, part of the Avamere Family of Companies, is an assisted living and memory care community. Here staff provide numerous opportunities for residents to engage with one another and enjoy each day.
Fun at Avamere at The Stratford
Every Wednesday, residents gather for their weekly matinee showing chosen by their very own Resident Council. The Resident Council shares with the staff what’s working and what’s not, including new activities and amenities they’d like to see.
They also enjoy movies every night at 6:30 following dinner in their restaurant-style dining area.
Additionally, residents take joy in live entertainment every Thursday. One of their live entertainment visitors was a band of retired police offers, featuring one of their very own residents!
They also enjoy scenic drives, BBQs, prom, and several in-house amenities, including massages, a chapel, and a salon. Their 11th annual prom was held June 28, 2019 with a red carpet theme. The residents were treated like royalty by the services team, who were all dressed in tuxedo tops. They even enjoyed being serenaded by one of the dietary aides, Brian (far left in the photo), who sang Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra.
Everything the staff do and provide is done with the residents in mind. For example, a podiatrist and mobile dentist visit once a month and soon they’ll have a nurse on location seven days a week.
“Really they’re running the community,” said Jessica Plante, Community Relations Director. “Their happiness dictates our success, so we’re taking the time to listen to them.”
“Our dining program is exceptional,” Jessica said.
The dining hall showcases meals in glass cases so residents can see – and even smell – their food before making their selection.
They serve two main entrees and provide an alternate menu with a variety of meal options, including fish, burgers, omelets, and homemade soup.
Specialized dementia care
What really makes Avamere at The Stratford stand out is their Passages Program for residents living with dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment.
These residents do everything together – they eat together and play games together. The program, offered for a full or half day, provides opportunities to exercise their brains to keep dementia from progressing.
“And it really does help,” Jessica said. “Residents who have been in the program are able to maintain their baseline.”
Avamere at The Stratford staff pride themselves in their loyal team. Many of the staff have been around from eight to 16 years, giving residents a familiar friendly face each day.
But it’s not just people that provide comfort for the residents – Avamere at The Stratford has a community cat, Sarah, that the memory care residents enjoy.
A place to call home
Avamere at The Stratford is home, and the apartments are designed to create that home-like environment residents want and need.
The studios and apartments feature built-in shelves, a breakfast bar, and kitchenette. Assisted living residents can select a modest studio or a spacious two-bedroom apartment. No matter which they choose, Avamere at The Stratford staff aim to make their community home for each resident.
