The Centers for Medicaid Services introduced a new consumer alert icon for abuse on October 23, 2019. This new icon found on Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website brings significant changes to the skilled nursing world, including capping survey ratings at two stars.

Here’s what this icon is and how Avamere is training its staff to prepare for state surveys.

The abuse icon

This icon, a hand inside a stop sign, is placed on the NHC website next to buildings that have received one of the following citations:

  • G (actual harm) level citation for F600, F602, or F603 in the past year
  • More than one D (potential for harm) level citation for those same tags in the past two years

Monthly training

Starting January 2020, Avamere began holding monthly interdisciplinary team meetings to educate staff on addressing certain situations and preparing for state surveys.

Each month focuses on a different topic with a brief 20-minute presentation followed by resources for the leaders in attendance to use to train their front-line staff.

These trainings are organized by Kim Games, Regional Nurse Consultant with Avamere Living skilled nursing. Each month she recruits Avamere staff members to share their expertise on the given topic.

“My goal is to tap into the expertise that we have throughout the company,” Kim shared. “They can make a difference.”

Presenting abuse with behavioral patients

February’s session focused on presenting abuse with behavioral patients. Three Avamere team members presented this topic along with Kim:

  • Carl Tabor, Executive Vice President of Quality
  • Jessie Wheatley, Administrator, Avamere at Pacific Ridge
  • Paula Love, Director of Clinical Informatics

March’s session will focus on managing patients that wander and elope. Recaps of these sessions will be included in the bimonthly employee newsletter, the Insider.

The new abuse icon is a major change in the skilled nursing world, and Avamere leaders are preparing their staff to continue to reach and maintain outstanding scores on state surveys.
